WELCOME TO TRUMLAND HOUSE

Situated on the beautiful island of Rousay, overlooking much of Orkney mainland, Trumland House Gardens are a wonderful place to visit. This ongoing restoration project of both house and gardens offers a wonderful mix of lawns, a lovely walled garden, woodland and burn, as well as spaces left for the wildlife. Trumland House Gardens are a great attraction for nature and garden lovers alike.

ABOUT TRUMLAND HOUSE

Contact

Trumland is a stunning  listed house and associated estate on the beautiful, isolated island of Rousay, which is part of Orkney, Scotland.

Trumland House was built in 1873 for Lt Gen F W T Burroughs and his wife Eliza Doyle Geddes, designed by David Bryce one of Scotland pre-eminent architects.  The grounds have gone through several changes through the years, even including a golf course at one time, though the walled garden retains its Victorian essence.

Unfortunately after a catastrophic fire in April 1984, the house and gardens were left in a derelict condition, until the present owners started on a scheme to restore, repair and where necessary rebuild the house and its gardens.

EXTRAORDINARY SEALIFE

Rousay is a small island off the north of mainland Orkney, so has wonderful sea views from practically every vantage, including the ferry to and from Tingwall. Along with seabirds such as Guillemots, Razorbills, Terns, Gannets, you can also see Puffins, Skuas and Divers.

Rousay also has some wonderful sea mammals, such as common and grey seals, otters, and if you lucky, basking sharks, dolphins and whales.

EXTRAORINDARY  BIRDLIFE

With a wide range of habitats from coastal, moorland, farmed and woods within a relatively small space, Rousay offers excellent opportunities to see Orkney's wonderful birdlife.

Some local species/specials include Willow Warbler, Goldcrest, Linnet, Stonechat, Goldfinch, Song Thrush, Red Grouse, Short Eared Owl, Hen Harrier, Red Throated Diver, Cuckoo, Puffin, Terns and Skuas, as well as many other regulars, and some rarities, including both Golden and White tailed Eagles.

EXTRAORDINARY LIFE

An amazing project to try and sympathetically restore this stunning house , and its gardens to their previous glory. As well as attempting to reclaim and restore the original gardens, our main aim is to manage the estate with habitat creation and wildlife at its heart.

Very much a long term project by a small and dedicated team led by the very much hands-on owners,  Although it can be hard to see the end, there has been undeniable progress, and few things are as fulfilling as seeing native plants return, new trees planted and becoming established, and with them animal life expanding
